CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the study
Citizen journalism, an increasingly prevalent phenomenon in the contemporary media landscape, has emerged as a potent force in combating corruption, particularly in nations like Nigeria where corruption poses significant socio-political and economic challenges. This introduction delves into the role of citizen journalism in the context of Nigeria's fight against corruption, elucidating key concepts, variables, their interrelationships, and the factors influencing them. In its simplest form, citizen journalism refers to the practice of ordinary individuals, often without formal journalistic training, engaging in the collection, analysis, and dissemination of news and information, typically through digital platforms and social media channels (Bowman & Willis, 2015). Corruption encompasses a range of unethical and illegal behaviors wherein individuals in positions of power misuse their authority for personal gain, often at the expense of the public good (Transparency International, 2019). The relationship between citizen journalism and combating corruption in Nigeria is multifaceted. Citizen journalism serves as a watchdog, providing alternative channels for information dissemination and exposing instances of corruption that traditional media may overlook (Mwesige & Muhindo, 2018). Furthermore, by empowering citizens to participate in the public discourse and hold government officials accountable, citizen journalism fosters transparency and civic engagement, both crucial elements in the fight against corruption (Onibere, 2016). Factors influencing the effectiveness of citizen journalism in combating corruption include access to technology and internet connectivity, levels of civic literacy and engagement, legal frameworks protecting freedom of expression, and the degree of government transparency and accountability (Olayiwola & Adetimirin, 2017). On the other hand, corruption is fueled by systemic issues such as weak governance structures, lack of transparency, impunity, and socio-economic inequalities (Transparency International, 2020).
1.2 Statement of the problem
Corruption is a pervasive issue in Nigeria, hindering economic development, undermining public trust in institutions, and impeding social progress (Transparency International, 2021). Despite efforts by government and anti-corruption agencies, the problem persists, pointing to systemic challenges in traditional approaches to combating corruption.
In recent years, citizen journalism has emerged as a potential tool for transparency and accountability in Nigeria. Citizen journalists, often armed with smartphones and social media platforms, have been able to capture and disseminate information about corrupt practices in real-time, bypassing traditional media channels (Ugochukwu, 2019). However, the role and effectiveness of citizen journalism in combating corruption in Nigeria remain underexplored. This study aims to investigate the role of citizen journalism in combating corruption in Nigeria.

1.5 Research hypotheses
Null Hypothesis (H0): Citizen journalism does not play any significant role in combating corruption in Nigeria
Alternative Hypothesis (H1): Citizen journalism plays a significant role in combating corruption in Nigeria.
1.6 Significance of the study
Conducting research on the role of citizen journalism in combating corruption in Nigeria is significant for several reasons:
Understanding Impact: Research helps to quantify and qualify the impact of citizen journalism on corruption mitigation. By analyzing data and case studies, researchers can determine the extent to which citizen journalists have been successful in uncovering corruption, raising awareness, and prompting action.
Policy Implications: Findings from research can inform policy decisions aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in Nigeria. Policymakers can use evidence-based recommendations to implement regulations that support and protect citizen journalists, thereby fostering an environment conducive to combating corruption.
Media Literacy: Research on citizen journalism contributes to enhancing media literacy among the population. Understanding the role and limitations of citizen journalism helps individuals critically evaluate information, discern credible sources, and participate more effectively in anti-corruption efforts.
Empowering Communities: Citizen journalism empowers communities to hold authorities accountable and demand transparency. Research can shed light on the mechanisms through which citizen journalists engage with communities, mobilize support, and foster collective action against corruption.
Global Implications: Nigeria's experience with citizen journalism and corruption has implications beyond its borders. Research findings can contribute to international discussions on media freedom, civic engagement, and anti-corruption strategies. Lessons learned from Nigeria can inform similar initiatives in other countries facing similar challenges.
1.7 Scope of the study
This study focuses to examine the role of citizen journalism in combating corruption in Nigeria, examine the factors that militate against the role of citizen journalism in combating corruption in Nigeria, and find out the strategies to combat the factors that militate against the effective role of citizen journalism in combating corruption in Nigeria. Journalists in Nasarawa state shall serve as enrolled participants for this study.
1.8 Limitation of the study
Like in every human endeavour, the researchers encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. The significant constraint are:
Time: The researcher encountered time constraint as the researcher had to carry out this research along side other academic activities such as attending lectures and other educational activities required of her.
Finance: The researcher incurred more financial expenses in carrying out this study such as typesetting, printing, sourcing for relevant materials, literature, or information and in the data collection process.
Availability of Materials: The researcher encountered challenges in sourcing for literature in this study. The scarcity of literature on the subject due to the nature of the discourse was a limitation to this study.
1.9 Definition of terms
Citizen Journalism: Citizen journalism refers to the practice of ordinary individuals, without formal journalism training, engaging in the gathering, reporting, and dissemination of news and information using various media platforms, such as social media, blogs, and citizen news outlets.
Combating Corruption: Combating corruption involves the systematic efforts aimed at reducing or eliminating corrupt practices within a society or institution. It encompasses measures such as investigation, prosecution, public awareness campaigns, policy reforms, and the promotion of transparency and accountability.
